Getting Sponsorship

 Getting Sponsorship

We have two ways for you to collect sponsorship - the traditional paper form which you can download here and the new online method where you can create your own sponsorship homepage and email the link to your potential sponsors. Simply click here and follow the instructions: www.justgiving.com/bch This site is a secure site used by many charities.

However you decide to collect your sponsorship make sure you are aware of the benefits of Gift Aid

Gift Aid allows charities to claim back the tax that has already been paid by sponsors as income or capital gains tax. If you Gift Aid your donation, Breast Cancer Haven will continue to receive an additional 28p for every £1 you raise.

Breast Cancer Haven can claim Gift Aid tax relief of 25p on every pound you give. HMRC will also be operating transitional provisions for Gift Aid donations made from 6 April 2008 until 5 April 2011, paying a Government supplement of 3p on every pound you give.

How does it work?
Anyone can make a Gift Aid donation as long as they are a UK taxpayer.
Once the donation has been received, Breast Cancer Haven then claim the tax back from the Inland Revenue. This does not cost the donor anything at all, and any amount can be gift aided.
However, we can't claim Gift Aid for couples; we need the name of one or both of the tax payers in order to claim Gift Aid.

How do I go about it?
All you have to do is ensure that your sponsors tick the Gift Aid box on the sponsor form, as well as filling in their full home address and post code (a work address, or 'ditto' marks will mean we cannot claim Gift Aid). You should then send the forms (or copies of them) to us with your donation.

Can everyone's donation be 'Gift Aided'?
Most donations can be 'Gift Aided' as long as:

  • it is a single donation (i.e. not the proceeds from a raffle or sale)
  • the person making the donation is a UK taxpayer and has paid sufficient tax to cover the tax we can claim on the donation

Are there any exceptions?
This is the only complicated bit! The Gift Aid rules state that the donor and their relatives or business partner cannot receive a 'substantial benefit' from making a donation under Gift Aid. This would include receiving a raffle ticket or ticket to a party, or if you fly anywhere for part of your event (such as a sponsored trek or marathon). Breast Cancer Haven cannot claim tax back on company donations. Instead they should be given including tax (i.e. gross). The company can then claim back the tax when doing their annual accounts.

We know Gift Aid sounds complicated, so if you have any questions or would like more information, please check www.direct.gov.uk/giftaid or give us a call!
