Proposal to Support Delivery of the Cancer Reform Strategy
In the Department of Health’s Cancer Reform Strategy, and the testing of new programmes as part of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative, Breast Cancer Haven was awarded a grant of £18,207 by the Yorkshire Cancer Network to evaluate the outreach programme Breast Cancer Haven at Home, in order to determine whether it is helpful for breast cancer survivors. This study started in April 2009 and recruitment is due to be completed at the end of February 2010.
Breast Cancer Haven at Home, which consists of a DVD, audio CD and web-based information, was developed to extend the availability of the Haven Programme to those people with breast cancer unable to reach one of the Haven centres in London, Leeds and Hereford. Breast Cancer Haven at Home includes many of the different elements from the in-house Haven Programme to support mind and body that are known to be helpful from Visitor feedback.
Participants living in the region covered by the Yorkshire Cancer Network were given a copy of the Breast Cancer Haven programme by breast care nurses at the hospitals they attended, and asked to complete and return a feedback questionnaire. To increase the return of feedback questionnaires, the study was extended to 200 women who had attended Breast Cancer Haven in Leeds.
In addition to the feedback questionnaires received, telephone interviews have been conducted with 10 of the responding participants to obtain further detailed views and comments. Analysis of questionnaire and interview data will be carried out during March 2010.
