What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a gentle and non-manipulative method for changing the way we ‘use’ our bodies. Common examples of us ‘using’ ourselves badly include slumping and holding our breath, which in turn leads to stiff and restricted movement. This restriction and tension can be exacerbated by pain and complex emotions.

How can Alexander Technique help?

The Alexander Technique can be of particular benefit to you as it is a gentle way of relaxing. It may also help with pain relief and can help with back, neck and shoulder pain. You can simply enjoy the lessons as a means of becoming more aware of your own body and how you use it, as well as how the mind and body work together.

What happens in an Alexander Technique workshop?

The workshop at Breast Cancer Haven is an introductory class where, in a group, you are able to learn about the background to the Alexander Technique as well as learning some useful procedures. This includes practising the classic semi-supine position (lying on the back with the knees bent) that allows maximum support and relief for your back. Awareness of body postures is introduced and you learn more about your habitual patterns and find ways to help correct them.

When can the Alexander technique be given?
